Tectonic plates make earthquakes when they move against each other. These plates are huge sections of the Earth’s crust that constantly shift, but sometimes they get stuck at their edges due to friction. When the stress from the movement builds up enough to overcome the friction, the plates suddenly slip. This sudden release of energy causes the ground to shake—what we feel as an earthquake.
